The Correct Use Of Soap by Magazine
(VirginCDV2156) 1980
if
only a few bands truly represented the face
of post punk then the sublime Magazine
was definitely one of them. Formed by Howard
Devoto in late 1977 after leaving the Buzzcocks
they released 4 albums. The
Correct Use Of Soap being one the third and most critics favourite. From the
urgent attack of the opening track “Because
You’re Frightened” to the melancholy semi-
autobiographical “Song From Under The
Floorboards” every song oozes pure
power pop with Devoto’s
black humour and sardonic wit. If you have’nt heard Magazine
before this is the one to listen to…if you wanna hear more then
either the compilation “Where The Power
is….” (Virgin CDV2924) or , even better, the box set
“Maybe It’s Right To Be Nervous Now” (Virgin Magbox1) which contains
rare demos and all their John Peel
sessions. The
Correct Use Of Soap-full track listing 2.
Model Worker 3.
I’m a Party 4
.You Never Knew Me 5.
Philadelphia 6. I Want To Burn Again 7. Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) 8. Sweetheart Contract 9.
