A.N.I.C - Sum 41 - On their DVD Sake Bombs And Happy Endings, lead singer Deryck Whibley claims this is their special "love" song dedicated to Anna Nicole Smith (A.N.I.C stands for "Anna Nicole Is a C--t.') Ballad Of Dwight Fry - Alice Cooper - including Renfield in the original Dracula. Alice dropped the "E" from the name as a way to avoid a lawsuit Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes - This was originally recorded in a 1920s Jazz style by Jackie DeShannon on her 1975 album, New Arrangement.Bette Davis was an actress known for playing strong, independent women. Her movies include What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? and All About Eve. She was famous for her New England accent and her eyes. Big Bad John - Jimmy Dean - Jimmy Dean wrote this about fellow actor John Mentoe ("Destry Rides Again"), who was 6' 5" tall. According to Dean's roommate (at the time), the song was intended to be a joke. Butterflies - Michael Jackson - This song was written back in 1978 when Michael was 20. He was referring to Jodie Foster, whom he had a crush on but was too shy to admit it. Candle In The Wind - Elton John - This is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. Norma Jean Mortenson was her name before she changed it and became an actress. She died of a drug overdose in 1962. The lyrics were written by John's writing partner, Bernie Taupin. He got the idea for the title from a quote he read about Janis Joplin. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz - This is named after the famous Western movie actor. The theme from Eastwood's movie The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly can be heard periodically throughout the song. Edie (Ciao Baby) - The Cult - This is about Edie Sedgwick, who was famous in New York's underground club scene. She appeared in many Andy Warhol films, about 11 or so. Her last film was Ciao! Manhattan, which was made without Warhol. That is why the song is called Edie (Ciao Baby). Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle - Nirvana - Frances Farmer was an actress who starred in several popular films in the '30s and '40s, but developed a reputation for being very difficult on the set. In 1942 she was arrested for drunk driving and made the mistake of going to Mexico, which violated her parole. When she returned, she was put in a mental institution where she reportedly underwent shock treatments and a lobotomy. She was released in 1949 and began a comeback in 1957, eventually getting her own TV show called Frances Farmer Presents. In 1970, Farmer died of cancer at age 56. Hammer Horror - Kate Bush - This was inspired by James Cagney playing the role of Lon Chaney as the hunchback-he was an actor in an actor in an actor, rather like Chinese boxes, and that was what Kate was trying to create. It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over - Lenny Kravitz - Kravitz wrote this about actress Lisa Bonet. They had broken up and he was trying to reconcile their relationship. They were married from 1989-1991 and had a daughter, Zoe. Jessie - Joshua Kadison - Kadison wrote this after his split with actress Sarah Jessica Parker, of Sex And The City fame. In 1997, she married actor Matthew Broderick. Lady D'Arbanville - Cat Stevens - This was inspired by Stevens' girlfriend, actress Patti D'Arbanville. She was also an inspiration for Stevens' songs "Wild World" and "Hard-Headed Woman." D'Arbanville went on to have an affair with Mick Jagger. Man On the Moon - R.E.M. - This was inspired by the late comedian Andy Kaufman. When he was a teenager, R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe saw Kaufman on Saturday Night Live, and has cited him as a huge influence ever since. Marlene On The Wall - Suzanne Vega - Vega wrote this about coping with loneliness. The singer finds comfort by looking up to a picture of Marlene Dietrich on the wall.Marlene Dietrich was a German actress who became an international film star in the 1930's. During World War II, she put her movie career on hold in order to entertain US troops, a move that won her the Medal of Freedom, the highest military award a civilian can receive. Dietrich was 90 years old when she died in 1992. Molly's Lips - The Vaselines - This song was named for the BBC television actress Molly Weir. Moses - Coldplay - Lead singer Chris Martin wrote this for his wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow. In the song, he is expressing how much of an impact she has had on his life and telling her that she knows she can count on him. Mr. Rogers - KoRn - This is about how much lead singer Jonathan Davis hates Fred Rogers, who had a children's show on PBS for many years called Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. He watched him as a child and now thinks he is a monster. Rosanna - Toto - This is about actress Rosanna Arquette. She was dating Toto keyboard player Steve Porcaro at the time, but Porcaro didn't write it. It was written by Toto leader David Paich. He decided to write it about Arquette when he saw how supportive she was of Porcaro. Arquette often came by the studio and brought the band food. She Said, She Said - The Beatles Inspired by actor Peter Fonda, who was dropping acid with Lennon and George Harrison. When Harrison had a bad trip and thought he was going to die, Fonda told him not to worry, that "I know what it's like to be dead." This gave Lennon the idea for the the lyrics, which he started writing. Take A Bow - Madonna This is about a failed romance Madonna had with "a movie star," possibly Warren Beatty. Take, Take, Take - The White Stripes Along with "White Moon," this is one of 2 songs on Get Behind Me Satan about Jack White meeting Rita Hayworth for the first time. The Ballad Of Jayne - L.A. Guns This is about Jayne Mansfield, a blonde bombshell who was a popular actress and pin-up girl in the '50s and '60s. She was often compared to Marilyn Monroe, and also died young. Mansfield was killed in a car accident when she was 34: "Now she's breakin' hearts in heaven." The Great Beyond - R.E.M. This was used in the 1999 movie Man On The Moon. The movie is about Andy Kaufman, a very strange actor/comedian who generated lots of media attention with his outrageous stunts. He played Latka on the TV show Taxi. The Right Profile - The Clash This is about actor Montgomery Clift (A Place in the Sun, From Here to Eternity) and his troubled life. Vera - Pink Floyd in The film The Wall the music heard playing during the opening credits is "The Little Boy that Santa Forgot" performed by Vera Lynn. That song is about a fatherless boy. This song refers to another classic by Vera Lynn called "We'll meet again." You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim) - Rod Stewart Stewart admitted he wrote this to appease Ekland, who filed a $12 million palimony suit against him. It did work, and she withdrew the suit.
